Crochet Podcast Episode 19

Lululoves crochet podcast | Episode 19

Hello. I hope you are having a wonderful December, these past few weeks I've been consumed with Christmas crafting in preparation for the big day...

Finished Objects:

I've finished the crochet scarf I was making in the last podcast. I've really enjoyed the process and am already looking forward to making another. I used Caron Simply Soft in Off White.

Also finished is the cowl I was making using the same stitch pattern. This one needs a bit more work before I share it.

I've been working on a crochet version of 'The Snowman' the pattern was in issue 77 of Simply Crochet Magazine. It's such a lovely pattern, easy to follow and there are no pesky limbs to sew on! I haven't had a chance to photograph him finished yet so you'll have to watch the podcast to see him ;) I used one ball of Paintbox Cotton DK in shade Champagne White (currently on offer on Love Knitting!) and a 3.5mm hook.

I'm also sharing my woes over a knitted scarf I've started which was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my husband but as it turns out I am a terribly slow knitter it looks like he may have to wait till next Christmas!

Craft Projects:

Lulu and I have been making candles this week, to give as Christmas gifts and to decorate the Christmas table. We picked up some gorgeous vintage glass creamer jugs for a car boot sale in the summer. I purchased a 1kg bag of Soy Wax and some wicks and we just got stuck in. I used an old aluminium jug and boiled a casserole pot of water to melt the wax. We added a few drops of essential oils for scent. I'm so happy with them I'll definitely be making more. I've been nervous about trying to make candles because I assumed I'd need a full kit of tools, but these were so simple. I may do a separate post for them so I can add some more exact details but it really was as simple as melting some wax and pouring into the moulds.

New Items:

I made a trip to Hobbycraft this week and picked up a few crafting pieces for Lulu for Christmas, I particularly love these little wooden unicorn threading kits, they are so inexpensive and perfect to give her friends or for little stocking stuffers. I also picked this one up for me!

I also bought this canvas travel knitting bag, a bargain at £5. I plan to personalise it with either my pin collection or some embroidery.

I managed to snag the very last ball of the Red Katia Crepusculo yarn after falling in love with it last month! It's sadly been discontinued to I can't link it...but I will soon be sporting my very own red velvet beret!

One of my Christmas projects this year is to make another Diamonds and Bobbles jumper. I'm going to try to see how it works up with DK weight yarn so I've purchased several balls of King Cole Authentic Cotton Mix in the shade Red Denim. It's a lovely marled yarn made up of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic. I'm really excited to try this yarn...it comes in some beautiful shades.

I'm talking about festive books in this episode and sharing some book recommendations for gifts.

1. One day in December by Josie Silver  - Such a lovely cosy read, it's a love story set over ten years, told from both sides.

2. Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder - I read "Little House on the Prairie" as a child but never any of the others in the series, I think they will be cosy reads for winter.

3. A Literary Christmas - British Library Publishing (Various Authors) - I've really enjoyed dipping in and out of this book so far, it's full of Christmas excerpts from some of the best-known novels, alongside poetry and beautiful Christmas images.

4. A Scandi Christmas by Christiane Bellstedt Myers - A beautiful craft book, full of festive makes.

5. Mary Poppins by P L Travers, illustrated by Lauren Child - I've purchased this gift edition for Lulu for Christmas. I just adore Lauren Child's illustrations and this book does not disappoint - Have a look at the podcast for some of the beautiful illustrations.

I'm talking about the BBC's Drama "Mrs Wilson" Starring Ruth Wilson as her own grandmother. A really fascinating account of the story of a bigamist and secret service agent/writer Alexander Wilson.

Anyway, that's all for this episode - I'll be back in the New Year with another podcast.

Wishing you all a lovely Christmas,
